Preventing Falls

What Causes Someone to Fall?

Falls may be more likely because of weakness, poor vision, problems with balance, and tingling or numbness in the hands and feet. Other factors that may increase the risk for falls are medications that cause drowsiness - or hazards in the environment like throw rugs and slippery floors.

Always report a fall to your Hope staff member.

Prevent Falling

  • Sit upright and count to 10 before you stand, go slowly
  • Use a cane or walker, and ask your caregiver for help if you feel unsteady
  • Turn on the lights
  • Wear your glasses
  • Wear slippers that have tread on the soles
  • Have throw rugs removed in all the areas where you walk
  • Be very careful on the stairs and in the bathroom on wet tiles
  • Talk to Hope staff about a lifeline calling button if you are frequently alone
